 About the role

Based at Head Office in Wellington and reporting to the Head of People and Capability, you will have a significant skillset in driving and leading culture change to ensure the Health, Safety and Wellbeing programs are thought of as business as usual.

As the subject matter expert, you will provide the advice and support to all arms of the organisation, promoting continuous improvement and ensuring all stakeholders, including employees and volunteers, receive relevant information and training to provide for sustainable success.

This is a critical role, requiring an outcome focussed individual, with excellent time management skills, a positive and proactive outlook and a strong ability to influence and motivate.

Duties

  • Develop, implement, monitor and review an effective HSW strategic plan that is aligned to the goals and objectives of the organisation
  • Lead the development of HSW policies, initiatives and programmes to achieve required outcomes
  • Model best practice leadership by ensuring specialist and strategic advice, practical guidance and support is available to the Executive Leadership Team, Managers, Staff and the National Board
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements, including legislation and national codes of practice, and ensure these are integrated into the HSW Management framework
  • Partner with the business to promote awareness and understanding of these requirements to ensure compliance with and support for all HSW policies, guidelines and initiatives
  • Ensure HSW reporting is developed and delivered to ensure accurate information is at hand to allow continued management and visibility of HSW performance
  • Build and maintain positive, supportive and collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance HSW outcomes
  • Responsible for undertaking internal audits, reviewing strategies and all external and internal HSW audit results and corrective actions
  • Recommend and lead improvements, working alongside teams to advise on risk and best practice health and safety
  • Ensure all incidents, accidents, injuries and near misses are reported into the health and safety reporting tool and monitor the implementation of actions arising from investigations to ensure their completion within agreed timeframes
  • Lead and promote the provision of specialist and strategic advice to give assurances and confidence through effective management of HSW resources to embed a continuous improvement HSW culture organisational wide

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in occupational health and safety
  • Proven capability in achieving HSW performance improvement
  • Experience in leading cultural change from a health and safety perspective
  • Solid working knowledge of New Zealand’s regulatory requirements
  • Highly effective communication skillset – both written and oral
  • Proven experience with auditing / SafePlus would be an advantage
  • A good understanding of injury prevention, return to work programs and claims management
  • Ability to work in a complex and diverse environment, deal with ambiguity and across all departmental functions
