The Company:

Wakatū Incorporation is a family owned business with approximately 4,000 shareholders who descend from the Maori land-owners of the Nelson, Tasman, and Golden Bay regions – known as Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South). Wakatū manages assets and related business enterprises, including Kono NZ LP, a premium New Zealand food and beverage company. Kono employ approximately 500 staff at the heat of the harvest season, farm over 530 hectares of land and sea, and export to over 25 countries throughout the world.  Wakatū also has an extensive property portfolio. The Role:

Reporting to the GM of Property and Commercial, we are looking for a seasoned Health and Safety professional with proven capability to work from a business improvement/operational excellence stance to develop and operationalise our Health and Safety strategy.

This pivotal role is responsible for owning the Health and Safety framework and working alongside leaders and staff in the organisation to empower them in its delivery. Training, coordinating and monitoring are three key themes of this role. With the initial goal of maintaining confident compliance across all areas of the group and building on this foundation.

To be successful you will need a relevant tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety with extensive experience at a strategic and operational level in a complex commercial setting.  Alignment with the core values of Wakatū will be imperative.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Proven ability to partner with business units to advise, train and mentor groups and individuals
  • Experience in business improvement/operational excellence processes
  • Demonstrated evidence of success, within a multi-site environment
  • Proven ability to develop and operationalise strategy
  • A consistent and methodical approach, with great analytical skills
  • Experience in the managing of budgets and resources
  • Pragmatic and logical decision-making ability
  • A proactive, positive and engaging manner
  • Sound influencing and negotiating skills with those in the senior leadership team through to those working on the ground
  • Strong communication across all levels
  • Successful track record of creating a positive safety culture
