Our client is seeking a strong leader to champion and integrate health and safety practice into operational activities; motivating others and leading culture change.  Experience within transport, ports or logistics operations would be advantageous.

The company

Our client operates within a safety critical environment, providing a broad range of services to the shipping industry. The recognised market leader within their field, this is a high-profile growth organisation.

With more than 300 employees and operations throughout New Zealand, our client requires someone to drive the group health and safety agenda, facilitating a safe and healthy working environment for staff.

Reporting into the CE and working with a small dedicated team you will be required to engage with the board and senior operational managers. Strong influencing skills and a strategically minded approach are essential for this opportunity.

This role would be suited to someone with proven leadership skills who has a background within safety critical environments. Knowledge of logistics, transport or port operations would be advantageous.

The position may be based in Auckland, Tauranga or Wellington.

The role requires you:

To provide accurate and specialised advice and support to management and staff, in order to foster a safe and healthy workplace.

To ensure the framework and protocols for effective safety management are in place, together with the required monitoring and continuous improvement aspects to ensure all risks and concerns are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner,  as well as promoting healthy well-being practices.

Duties include:

To be successful in this role, you will have significant leadership experience within a high risk health and safety environment (this is not a step up role):

  • Strategic planning and implementation
  • Responsibility for reporting at Board level
  • Collaborative working with the depots to ensure compliance
  • Provide relevant/up to date advice, assistance and resources to key stakeholders
  • Coordinate health and safety projects
  • Ensure prompt and accurate reporting or incidents, leading remedial actions
  • Provide the direction, mentoring and leadership to direct reports
  • Build up strong relationships throughout the business

Skills and experience required:

  • Appropriate qualification level (OHS/Management)
  • Senior Health and Safety Manager
  • Significant number of years experience in a similar high risk environment
  • Able to demonstrate successful outcomes with senior business leaders, frontline leaders, as well as working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
  • Expert knowledge of New Zealand Health and Safety laws and regulations
  • Able to drive and develop a robust safety culture
