Antarctica New Zealand are looking for a Health and Safety Manager to champion their health and safety strategy and systematically improve the health, safety and wellbeing of their people.

The company

Antarctica New Zealand is a Crown entity established to develop, manage and execute NZ’s activities in respect of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.  Key activities include facilitating scientific research in Antarctica, protection of the environment and raising public awareness of the global significance of the continent and surrounding Southern Ocean.

Antarctica New Zealand operates in an office and warehouse environment in Christchurch.  In Antarctica operations range from Scott Base to surrounding field locations upto 1000km away.  Excellent leadership in the management of safety and risk are critical to successfully achieving the New Zealand Antarctic programme.

This role is responsible for the development, implementation and management of Antarctica New Zealand’s Health and Safety System to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, contractors and visitors to ensure no one is harmed.

Duties

  • Lead and champion the delivery of Antarctica New Zealand’s Health and Safety Strategy.
  • Provide technical advice and subject matter expertise to the Senior Leadership Team and Managers on a range of matters.
  • Coordinate Antarctic stakeholders and shared duty holders with relevant, accurate and timely advice.
  • Maintain OHSAS 18001: 2007 accreditation and lead transition to ISO45001 or alternative verification.
  • Manage, maintain and improve the Health and Safety System, including implementation and review of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and coach HSE reporting, investigations, corrective actions and safety learnings.
  • Analyse system outputs and data trends and advise on practical solutions.
  • Maintain and enhance a proactive health and safety culture.
  • Inspire, engage, influence, support and motivate staff and shared duty holders.

Skills and experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • At least 3 years’ experience leading health and safety projects
  • Experience with systems management (OHSAS 18001), risk management, hazardous substances and audits
  • Experience with relevant H&S legislation, safety case development, safety in design and contemporary health and safety concepts.
  • Project management experience
  • Creative thinker and problem solver
  • Comfortable working at multiple levels to achieve H&S outcomes
  • Ability to coach and influence a strong health and safety culture.
  • Strong, clear communicator – written and verbal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, Word, Excel, MS Project, etc.
